LOS ANGELES: Mayor warns ICE to back off immigration raids

Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa warned federal authorities to stop work-site raids because of the potential of collapsing the area's economy. The mayor said in a letter to Homeland Security Secretary Michael Chertoff that work-site raids by Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) could have "severe and long-lasting effects" on the local economy, the Los Angeles Times reported today.

ICE has been making unprecedented work-site detentions of undoucumented workers that has already caused the bankruptcy of many essential businesses in Southern California. The mayor accused federal officials of targeting "established, responsible employers" in industries that rely on "workforces that include undocumented immigrants."

The mayor through a spokesman said Los Angeles business leaders hope to discuss their concerns with Michael Chertoff in person next week during an annual business trip to Washington.

Los Angeles is the city most populated with residents of Mexican descent in the USA and has become a favorite target of bigots like Lou Dobbs of CNN News. There is now a campaign by the anti-Mexican racists to pit Blacks against Latinos. One entity in this campaign is the Walt Disney radio station KABC.
